Getting ready for the rain: Cleanliness Drive within Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation, Vapi

A ‘Cleanliness Drive’ was successfully conducted near the NSIC Hospital and near RO, GPCB by the Notified Area Authority (NAA) under the guidance of the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) and with technical support from the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) under the Sustainable and Environment-friendly Industrial Production (SEIP) project. The cleaning took please on 23rd and 31st of March respectively.

The drive aimed at bringing visible aesthetic improvement to the GIDC Estate Vapi and also to reduce pollution in the form of solid waste through a so-called Cleanliness Drive. During the Drive, waste dumps near the storm water drainage system of the GIDC area were removed. These dumps fill up the open chambers of the drainage with plastic and other debris leading to clogging as well as water and soil pollution. The storm water chamber near NSIC hospital was also filled with the waste dumps frequently leading to choking and flooding during the rainy season.

In early March 2017, GIZ conducted a baseline study outlining and describing the amount and extent of the waste dumps amongst other maintenance issues in the industrial estate. Based on the findings of the baseline, GIZ was able to initiate the Cleanliness Drive in GIDC, Vapi along with GIDC and NAA.

The activity was implemented with two officials from NAA, 12 labourers, one loader and two tractors. In total, about 30 tonnes of solid waste was removed from the area which is now ready for the monsoon to arrive.
