Retrofitting of IT Parks: Launch of 5-Point Programme

The Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC), in technical cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, launched a unique and first of its kind initiative on “Retrofitting of IT Parks” with a 5-point programme.  Mr K T Rama Rao, Hon’ble Minister for Panchayat Raj and Information Technology, Government of Telangana launched the programme in a special function held today at Tech Mahindra Auditorium, Hi-Tech City, Hyderabad.

The programme is targeted to retrofit (upgrade) the IT Parks to world class standards by introducing concepts of green buildings, cycling to work, increasing green cover, waste management, rainwater management and making the buildings barrier free for usage by physically challenged and disabled people. The 5-point programme includes:

  • Retrofitting of existing buildings into Green Buildings and Barrier Free Workspaces
  • Solid Waste Management in the Industrial Park, including E-waste management and municipal solid waste (MSW) management 
  • Promotion of "Cycle to Work"
  • Increasing green cover in the Industrial Parks  
  • Stormwater management and rain water harvesting 

The programme is partnered by multiple agencies with expertise in specific areas, including the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, NASSCOM Foundation, SRACO (an NGO), Trident City and the State Groundwater Department of the Telangana State. The programme is expected to improve economic performance, work environment, employability and environmental performance of the IT Parks. Also, the programme will help provide barrier free work spaces that will become accessible to physically challenged and disabled persons so that they too can employment opportunities.

To mark the launch of the programme, the IT Minister released a balloon, planted samplings, launched a bicycle station and released am information brochure on the programme. During his address to the gathering, that had over 400 participants mostly from the IT Parks, the IT Minister said that they would like to make the IT Parks exemplary industrial parks. He said that the Telangana Government is committed to green initiatives and that they would like to see Telangana not just developing industrially but also environmentally green. He informed that in the next three years the State Government is targeting to have 2 billion tree saplings planted across the Telangana state in next three years. He informed about the support provided by GIZ for planning of Green Industrial Parks at Jadcherla and Nandigama, and the retrofitting in Nacharam and Mallapur Industrial Parks. He informed that the new project on Climate Change on Adaptation in Industrial Areas with GIZ support would also help address the climate change issues.

Mr Jayesh Ranjan, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of TSIIC gave welcome address. Presentation of the 5-Point Programme was made by Mr Raghu Babu, Senior Technical Advisor and Programme Coordinator from GIZ. Vote of thanks was given by Mr E V Narasimha Reddy, Executive Director, TSIIC, Telangana State. Mr A Gandhi, Hon’able Member of Legislative Assembly, Seriligampally appreciated the initiative taken up by TSIIC in technical support of GIZ and expressed how important various aspects of the programme, particularly of rain water harvesting for the region. Mr Narasimha Reddy, Executive Director of TSIIC gave vote of thanks.
