Two-day Training Programme on “Environment Friendly Techniques for Textile Sector”

GIZ, with the resource persons from the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) conducted a 2-day training programme on “Environment Friendly Techniques for Textile Sector” on November 21-22, 2013 at the Center of Excellence of the Vatva GIDC Industrial Estate near Ahmedabad. The programme was organised in active collaboration with Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre (GCPC) and was intended to initiate and facilitate awareness and knowledge on environment friendly technologies/techniques for the textiles sector so as to strengthen environmental management and pollution control in the industries. The training programme is a part of the core topic of “Environment Friendly Techniques in Textile Sector” of the Sustainable Industrial Development component of the Indo German Environment Partnership (IGEP) Programme. Under this core topic, GIZ is focusing in the state of Gujarat and is cooperating with GCPC, GPCB and GIDC. The textiles sector has relevance as is widely known to be an energy and water intensive sector, also having greater implication from the environmental angle. ‘Environmental Friendly Technologies/Techniques’ could play a significant role in reducing the negative environmental impact provided suitable approach is adopted and right kind of technology is selected by the industries.
The participants were from textile industries and technology providers and representatives from regulatory bodies related to the textile industries. The Inaugural Session was attended by Mr. Nitin Thakkar, President, Ahmedabad Textile Processors Association, Mr. Shankar Patel, President, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industries, Mr. Devang Thaker, GPCB, Mr. G. H. Trivedi, GPCB and Ms. Almuut Reichart, UBA.
Ms. Brigitte Zietlow (UBA), together with Ms. Almut Reichart (UBA), Mr. Dinesh Yadav (Arvind Envisol), Mr. Trushit Desai (Enpro) provided respective technical inputs (Presentations attached) for the sector as reflected in the attached agenda. Mr. Vipul Desai, Director, Durga Polyster Pvt. Ltd. provided insights to the techniques they adopted and environment & economic gains achieved by the industry. The discussions were moderated by Mr. Debajit Das, Technical Advisor, GIZ-IGEP in order to understand the concept from the German prospective and its applicability in the Indian context. Mr. Nitesh Patel, Junior Advisor, GIZ-IGEP concluded with the presentation on the Best Available Techniques for the Indian textile industries based on the outcomes of the pilot studies conducted in textile cluster of Narol.
Mr. Sachin Patel, Sameer Synthetic Mills explained various techniques which they are practicing in order to optimise their resource consumption and reducing waste in order to have reduced environmental impacts and yet to be competitive in the business.
M/s. Komal Texfab volunteered for the industrial visit for the participants to demonstrate and discuss practically the Best Available Techniques for textile sector, which can be easily adopted.
Mr. Hardik Shah, Member Secretary, GPCB addressed the participants and urged the industries to take the benefit of the training programme. He said that GPCB could facilitate the industries implement environment friendly techniques. Mr. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC gave vote of thanks and assured support from his organisation to industries to facilitate knowledge on cleaner production & cleaner technologies. Certificates were distributed to the participants for successful participation in the programme.
