Consultations held with textiles industries for initiating pilot work on demonstrating environment friendly techniques

Under the thrust area of Sustainable Industrial Development (SID) of the IGEP Programme, one of the priority topics is “environment friendly techniques in identified industry sectors”. The textile sector has been identified as a priority sector in Gujarat and accordingly a stakeholder meeting was on January 04, 2013 by the GIZ-IGEP Programme and the Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre (GCPC), at the Ahmedabad Textile Processors’ Association (ATPA) to discuss on the possibilities of demonstrating environment friendly techniques in volunteering textiles industries. The representatives of GIZ (IGEP), GCPC, ATPA and owners of 15 textiles industries, including Er. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary of GCPC, Mr. Nitin Thakkar, President of ATPA and Mr. Nitesh Patel, Junior Advisor of GIZ (IGEP) were present.
The meeting was opened by Er. Bharat Jain, Member Secretary, GCPC (Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre). Mr. Jain introduced the activities taken up by GCPC in the field of “Cleaner Production” in Gujarat and also informed the participants regarding the ongoing cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, for applying “Eco-Industrial Development” concepts in the GIDC Industrial Estates.
A presentation on the proposed pilot activity in volunteering textiles industries was made by Mr. Nitesh Patel, Junior Advisor, GIZ (IGEP). After the presentation there was intensive round of discussion on the kind of pilots and requirement and intentions of the industries to take up pilot projects for “Environment Friendly Techniques in Textile sector”.
It was decided to focus the pilot work in the Narol Industrial Estate near Ahmedabad. It was decided to select 10-12 volunteering textiles industries for the pilot based on written interest expressed by them to GIZ (IGEP). On the basis of Expression of Interest, industries where solution could possibly be implemented viably will be selected and field visits will be carried out by GIZ (IGEP)/GCPC team from 2nd week of January 2013.
